The Government of Tamil Nadu has established two main government bodies for the successful development of the entire district. The government bodies of the city include Municipal Corporation and Madurai Local Planning Authority.
Madurai Local Planning Authority mobilizes the available resources and implements plans under the provision of Town and Country Planning Act. Once the plan is completed, the authorities of the department have to submit the building plans to the Member secretary for issuing planning permissions. Further, the local planning authority has introduced a plan named “Heritage Area Protection” in which the heritage buildings of the town have to be protected. It is important to know that the Government has issued orders sanctioning Rs 50 Lakhs for the development of the city in the year of 2008. In order to control traffic in the city, the local body has taken initiative in developing the roads in the form of traffic islands, junctions, road widening and much more.
Functions of Madurai Local Planning Authority
The main function of the local planning authority is to carry out surveys of the existing land & buildings under the provisions of Town and Country Planning. Based on the survey reports of land and buildings, the officials prepare a plan of the construction of the new building in the target year. Usually, the basic plans are incorporated in two forms such as Master Plan and Detailed Development Plan. In order to coordinate with the members of the committee, the Local Planning Authority conducts meeting once in every month. In the meeting, the authorities of the government discuss matters relating to master plan variation proposals, policy matters, planning permission, approvals and much more. The members of the local planning authority ensure to support and develop various commercial properties around the city.
Local Planning Authority Fund (LPA Fund)
The Local Planning Authority Fund is developed by the District Collector as per the stipulations of the Town and Country Planning Act. One of the main sources of income in this fund is through the development charges collected by the authorities for granting permission to construct the building within the local planning area. The administrative expense is one of the main expenses incurred in the planning program and the annual budget is fixed by the Director of the planning authority.
