Itinerary – 1 (Exploring Madurai on a taxi or hired cab)Traveling the entire Madurai city is quite comfortable but it is important to fix a known travel agent who would cover the city in one day. The city is filled with high temples and large mandapams, gopurams which definitely a one day trip would not be sufficient. You need to start your Madurai sightseeing trip a bit early may be by 8 or 9 to cover the entire major tourist spots.
MorningMadurai is highly famous for the temples and it is popularly referred as Temple city. If you are planning on a religious trip or holiday trip, it is important to visit the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple. This temple is the major highlight of the city and it is located at the heart of Madurai. You can easily reach from Madurai Airport to Meenakshi Amman temple in just 23 minutes. It is situated close at the distance of 12 kilometres from the airport. So you can easily visit the temple directly from the airport on a taxi. There are several restaurants and hotels located close to the temple, which you can take some refreshments or breakfast nearby.
Close to Meenakshi Amman temple, there are several religious places located nearby. Thirupparankundram God Murugan temple is situated at the distance of 7 kilometres from Meenakshi temple. You can reach the place in just 17 minutes that you can feel a real peace of mind and soul. The environment remains totally divine and holy. There is also an Islamic dargah present on top of the hill, which devotees visiting Ervadi dargah would visit this dargah first.
Late Afternoon/EveningYou can spend your afternoon lavishly by roaming the city for sightseeing. Gandhi Museum is the best tourist spot that you should not miss out in Madurai. This is one of the famous museums in Madurai built in memory of father of nation - M.K. Gandhi. There are several activities and entertainment stuffs inside this museum. Yoga and Hindi are taught free in this museum. There is no entry fee. Gandhi Museum is open from 10.00 AM to 6.30 PM. There is also a large library present inside the museum. It is located at Tamukkam area.
If you are planning to spend your evening at Madurai temples, then it is necessary to visit Pazhamudhircholai. You can easily reach the place in 15 minutes from the Meenakshi Amman temple. There is also Vishnu temple close to this temple. You can even visit by walk. With entering the Pazhamudhircholai, you would feel a hilly atmosphere which it is said to be a thick dense forest rich in flowers, fruits and vegetables.

Itinerary – 2 (Exploring Madurai on Bus)You can start your day with visiting the Vaigai Dam very close from the city. Taking a chill refreshing bath at the Vaigai Dam can make you feel more energetic and enthusiastic. You can capture the the beautiful landscape and sceneries present around the Vaigai Dam location. It is exactly 90 kilometres from the city, which you can reach the place in 1 hour 30 minutes. It is the perfect spot for boating.
If you are interested for more fun and excitement, then make sure to visit the Adhisyam Amusement Theme Park that is 15 kilometres from the city. You can spend your entire day playing dry games and water games. Guess! Children and youngsters would definitely have a great day spending here at this theme park. It is just 18 minutes from the Madurai Periyar bus stand, which you will be charged approximately Rs. 15 – 20 per person.
Thirumalai Nayak Palace is one of the popular tourist spots in Madurai. The palace represents the ancient heritage and culture of the 17th century. There is also a temple, Rajarajeshwari temple inside the palace. If you are travelling by bus you can reach the palace in 15 minutes. There is no entry fee charged here. Very close to Thirumalai Nayak Palace is the Vandiyur Mariyamman Teppakulam. This is the famous pond in Madurai used for Hindu devotional festivals.
Late Afternoon/EveningIf you are more interested on sightseeing, then you can make a visit to Thirumalai Nayak Palace. The light and sound show is the major highlight of this palace. You would watch a lot of people rushing to watch this especially during the summer vacations. The show time in English and Tamil is only in evenings.

Other Spots you can cover in Madurai within a day includes attractions like Gorippalayam Dargah, St. Mary’s Cathedral Church, Kazimar Big Mosque, Koodal Alagar Temple, Courtallam falls, Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, etc. You need to spend at least four to five days to cover all the tourist spots. You can either hire a taxi or even travel on local auto rickshaws or buses available all round the city. They are affordable and offer the best timely services.
Things to remember while you are in MaduraiWear comfortable clothes that make you feel easy when you travel long distances. It is best to be accompanied by a travel guide if you feel language would be a problem. The majority of people speak Tamil in Madurai.
