Road Transport in Madurai
Madurai is the headquarters of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation and it is one among the seven circles of the Tamil Nadu State Highway network . The state highways SH-32,SH-33,SH-72 and the National highways NH 7,NH 45B,NH 208,NH 49 passes through the city. Currently all the national highways are being upgraded to multi-lane ways as part of National highway development program.
In order to travel in and around the city, one can opt for the government run local buses. This is one of the easiest modes of conveyance in Madurai. The local buses/deluxe buses cover the entire expanse of the city. The deluxe buses are slightly more expensive but less crowded and more comfortable. The city has four major bus terminus namely, Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Terminus (MIBT), Arappalayam, Anna Bus stand and Periyar Bus stand. Among these, Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand, is an ISO 9001:2000 certified integrated mofussil bus stand in the city of Madurai, MIBT bus stand, built at the cost of 10 crores, owes the pride to be one of the largest bus terminus in Tamil Nadu and the second busiest mofussil bus terminus in Tamil Nadu after Koyam.
Arappalayam bus station is a prime junction for the TNSTC, SETC buses going towards Coimbatore, Salem, Tirupur, Gobichettipalayam, Theni, Kambam, Karur and Dindigal. It is well connected with the railway station and the other bus stands. All city buses to other parts of the city available in Periyar bus stand. Apart from government buses, there are many private buses connecting the entire expanse of the city.
