Weekend Getaways near Madurai
Some of the popular waterfalls at Courtallam are Shenbaga Devi Falls, Thenaruvi (Honey Falls), Aintharuvi (Five Falls), Peraruvi (Main Falls), Puli Aruvi (Tiger falls), Chitraruvi (Small Falls), Pazhathotta Aruvi ( Fruit Falls), Puthu Aruvi (New falls), and Pazhaya Aruvi (Old Falls). Apart from falls, there are two important temples in Courtallam. One of those is dedicated to Lord Shiva- Thirukutralanathar temple and other temple is Murugan temple dedicated to Lord Muruga. It is just 2 kilometres from the Courtallam city. Located on the Western Ghats at the height of about 167 meters, Courtallam not only remains as a tourist spot but also serves as a popular health resort in South India.
How to Reach: If you are travelling by a taxi, it may take around exactly 3 hours from Madurai. You can also take direct bus from Madurai, which they may charge around Rs. 30-50.
Located just 123 kilometers from Madurai, Suruli Falls is surrounded by thick dense forest. Moreover, it origins from the Meghamalai hills, which people from nooks and corners of the country make sure to drop a visit to this falls.
Apart from the waterfalls, there are around 18 caves in and around Suruli waterfalls. An added attraction of this spot is, the Kailasanathar Temple Cave. It is situated near the falls that is just 800 meters above the Suruli falls. There is a spring nearby, which people residing there strongly believe that the spring water has abundant therapeutic powers.
How to reach: If you are travelling by road, it may take around 2 hours and 7 minutes from Madurai. You can either hire a taxi or reach the spot by taking a bus from Madurai Junction. There are also restaurants and hotels nearby, which you can check out while you travel.
