Courtallam Falls

Courtallam is one of the popular excursion places located very close to Madurai (160 kilometers from Madurai City).  Being blessed with enormous beauty, Courtallam is well-known for its waterfalls.  The best time to visit Courtallam falls is from June to September. You can take a refreshing cool ayurvedic bath, with water flowing from the rivers Pachaiyar, Manimuthar, Chittar and Tambaraparani at the height of about 167 meters. The Courtalls falls is popularly termed as the ‘Spa of the South’. As the water of the falls flows down through the forest (forest of medicinal plants and herbs), it is said that the water holds high therapeutic value and cures physical ailments with giving a relaxing effect on people bathing there.

Picnic Spots near Madurai

Some of the popular waterfalls at Courtallam are Shenbaga Devi Falls, Thenaruvi (Honey Falls), Aintharuvi (Five Falls), Peraruvi (Main Falls), Puli Aruvi (Tiger falls), Chitraruvi (Small Falls), Pazhathotta Aruvi ( Fruit Falls), Puthu Aruvi (New falls), and Pazhaya Aruvi (Old Falls).  Apart from falls, there are two important temples in Courtallam. One of those is dedicated to Lord Shiva- Thirukutralanathar temple and other temple is Murugan temple dedicated to Lord Muruga. It is just 2 kilometres from the Courtallam city. Located on the Western Ghats at the height of about 167 meters, Courtallam not only remains as a tourist spot but also serves as a popular health resort in South India.

How to Reach: If you are travelling by a taxi, it may take around exactly 3 hours from Madurai. You can also take direct bus from Madurai, which they may charge around Rs. 30-50.

Suruli Falls

Located very close to the Periyar National Park, Suruli remans as the perfect picnic spot nearby Madurai. You can enjoy the cool breeze of forest with taking a dip at the chill Suruli Waterfalls.  The major benefit of this falls is, there is water round the year that tumbles down from an altitude of 150 feet. But still the best time to visit the falls is between June to October. The level of the water in the falls is amazing especially during that period. Moreover, there are adequate facilities provided for men and women to take bath in the waterfalls separately.
 
Located just 123 kilometers from Madurai, Suruli Falls is surrounded by thick dense forest. Moreover, it origins from the Meghamalai hills, which people from nooks and corners of the country make sure to drop a visit to this falls. 

Apart from the waterfalls, there are around 18 caves in and around Suruli waterfalls. An added attraction of this spot is, the Kailasanathar Temple Cave. It is situated near the falls that is just 800 meters above the Suruli falls. There is a spring nearby, which people residing there strongly believe that the spring water has abundant therapeutic powers.

How to reach: If you are travelling by road, it may take around 2 hours and 7 minutes from Madurai. You can either hire a taxi or reach the spot by taking a bus from Madurai Junction. There are also restaurants and hotels nearby, which you can check out while you travel.
