Madurai is one of the second largest cities in Tamil Nadu that is endowed with rich cultural heritage and glorious traditions. Madurai Municipal Corporation
Established in 1971, Madurai Municipal Corporation is the sole authority to administer the entire Madurai city. It is important to know that Madurai is the second corporation in Tamil Nadu after the Chennai Corporation. Moreover, the city of Madurai is termed to be the administrative headquarters for the Madurai district. The Madurai Municipal Corporation has divided the Madurai district into thirteen talukas and revenue blocks.

Talukas of the Madurai district
Apart from this, the rural administration of the villages in Madurai is controlled by the panchayat villages (local government). The thirteen talukas of the Madurai district include Thiruparankundram, Melur, Madurai East, Madurai West, Kottampatti, Chellampatti, Kalligudi, Sedapatti, Usilampatti, Vadipatti, T. Kallupatti and much more. According to the census of 2001, it is estimated that the district holds only seven talukas and revenue blocks.
Madurai Local Planning Authority
The Government of Tamil Nadu instituted the industrialization policy for the faster growth of various development projects in the commercial, residential and other sectors of the economy. For this purpose, the Madurai Local Planning Authority has been established under section 10 of the Town and Country Planning Act. This planning authority is headed by a District Collector and the committee members are appointed as per the provisions of the Act. Further, the Madurai Local Planning Authority is operated by the Director of Town and Country Planning and the officers are nominated by the Government.
